About

Dr Linda van Heerden

Dr Linda van Heerden is an accomplished Paediatrician based at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt. With more than a decade of experience across both public and private sectors, she brings a holistic, empathetic approach to child healthcare, caring not just for her young patients but for the families who surround and support them.

Dr van Heerden knew from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor. While she approached her medical studies with an open mind, her calling to paediatrics became clear during her community service year, when she spent a full year working in paediatrics at a rural hospital in the Eastern Cape. It was here that she saw firsthand the resilience of children, who are joyful and refreshingly genuine despite their circumstances. This along with the gratitude of their families affirmed her passion for the field.

After completing her MBChB at Stellenbosch University in 2006, she obtained a Diploma in Child Health in 2009 and went on to complete her Fellowship of the College of Paediatricians (FC Paed) in 2018. She also holds a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Paediatrics from Stellenbosch University.

Dr van Heerden gained broad experience during her years as a medical officer and registrar, which equipped her to manage patients confidently and handle difficult situations. Since moving into private practice, she has continued to care for general paediatric patients and has also managed critically ill patients.

What distinguishes her practice is her emphasis on long-term relationships, caring for children from infancy into adolescence while forming a trusted connection with parents and caregivers. She draws on her own experience as a mother of two to reassure anxious parents, reminding them they are not alone in the challenges of parenthood. “I tell them I’ve been there too,” she says. “That shared experience helps build trust.”

She strives to create an environment where parents feel heard, supported and involved in every step of their child’s care. “I believe that compassion and empathy are just as essential as clinical skills and I make it a priority to ensure that families leave my care feeling reassured and empowered.”

Outside of medicine, she enjoys quality time with her husband and two daughters, often spent outdoors or gathered with friends. She’s a keen runner and finds relaxation in a good movie or series.

About

Dr Paul Keating

Dr Paul Keating is a highly experienced Paediatrician and Neonatologist practicing at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt in Bellville. With more than three decades in clinical practice across South Africa and the Netherlands, he has dedicated his career to caring for the most vulnerable patients—newborns requiring intensive and high-care support—while also maintaining an enduring commitment to general paediatrics.

From an early age, Dr Keating felt a natural affinity for children and animals. He initially considered veterinary medicine but ultimately chose a medical career. By his third year of study, he realised he preferred working with children, drawn to their honesty, resilience, and directness.

“Children are straightforward—you can see immediately when they’re well or unwell. They’re not pretending or trying to hide anything,” he reflects. His later years working in the Netherlands, where communication is famously direct, affirmed this appreciation for authenticity and clarity in his clinical interactions.

Dr Keating completed his M.B.Ch.B at Stellenbosch University in 1994 and obtained his M.Med in Paediatrics in 2000. He qualified as a Paediatrician the same year and went on to become a Registered Neonatologist through the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in 2009.

His postgraduate training included extensive experience in general paediatrics, neonatal ICU, paediatric ICU, surgical disciplines, and general medical care, across institutions such as Tygerberg Hospital, Conradie Hospital, West Coast Private Hospital, and major centres in the Netherlands.

His international career included roles as a Fellow in Neonatology at the University Medical Centre Groningen and as a General Paediatrician at Zevenaar Ziekenhuis and Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem. These years provided him with deep exposure to advanced neonatal care in a highly specialised environment.

In 2010, Dr Keating returned to South Africa to establish the neonatal ICU at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt. He has led the unit since its inception, overseeing an 8-bed neonatal ICU and a 6-bed high-care unit. He also manages a 3-bed paediatric high-care facility, where he treats post-surgical patients—including craniotomy and paediatric surgical cases—cardiac patients, and medically complex neonatal ICU graduates. His outpatient practice is focused on general paediatrics, with a special interest in paediatric high-care medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr Keating has maintained active involvement in clinical research. He has co-authored multiple publications in international, peer-reviewed journals, with work spanning neonatal oxygenation, congenital cardiac disease, cerebral physiology, and the effects of perinatal factors on long-term outcomes.

Whether supporting premature infants, guiding critically ill children through complex recoveries, or providing continuity of care in general paediatrics, Dr Keating remains deeply committed to evidence-based, compassionate, and straightforward patient care. His extensive expertise in neonatology, combined with his appreciation for the honesty and resilience of children, continues to shape his practice at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt.

About

Dr Zaheera Kajee

Dr Zaheera Kajee is a Paediatrician and Neonatologist practising at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt. With extensive experience in both public and private healthcare, she is passionate about providing high-quality, compassionate care to newborns and their families, especially those facing the challenges of premature birth and neonatal complications.

Inspired by her mother, a nursing sister who introduced her to the world of first aid through the St John’s Ambulance service, Dr Kajee developed an early interest in medicine. “She always encouraged me to be a doctor,’” recalls Dr Kajee. This, coupled with early volunteer work at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, laid the foundation for her medical journey.

After earning her MBChB from Stellenbosch University in 2004, Dr Kajee completed her internship at Victoria Hospital and community service at Paarl Hospital, where she spent nine months in the paediatrics department, including time in the neonatal unit. It was during these early clinical years that she gravitated towards paediatrics—and especially neonatology.

She went on to complete her Fellowship of the College of Paediatricians (FCPaed SA) in 2012 and earned her Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in 2015. In 2016, she obtained her Certificate in Neonatology, having completed advanced clinical training at Tygerberg Hospital. Her research on paediatric diabetes management was presented locally and internationally, including at the ISPAD+APEG Conference in Brisbane.

Dr Kajee has held a range of roles across the paediatric spectrum at Tygerberg Hospital, including registrar and neonatal senior registrar positions. Her clinical expertise includes neonatal intensive care, cranial ultrasound, ventilation strategies, and advanced neonatal resuscitation. Since 2016, she has served as a neonatal consultant in both public and private hospitals, and she is currently focused on providing specialist care to newborns at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt.

What draws Dr Kajee to neonatology is the remarkable resilience of premature babies. “They’re born far too early and go through so much,” she says. “But then they thrive. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them go home and grow into strong little people.”

Outside of medicine, she is a devoted wife and mother of two. She enjoys reading—particularly books on mindfulness, self-development, and improving interpersonal relationships—and prioritises quality time with her family.

About

Dr Liesel Andrag

Dr Liesel Andrag is a Paediatric Cardiologist based at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt, where she provides specialised care to children with congenital and acquired heart conditions. With over two decades of experience in paediatrics and subspecialist training in paediatric cardiology, she brings deep clinical expertise and compassion to every stage of her patients’ journeys—from diagnosis through to long-term follow-up.

Dr Andrag’s path to medicine began in high school, where she initially considered a career in psychiatry. But as she progressed through her medical studies at Stellenbosch University, she was increasingly drawn to paediatrics. “Children are incredibly resilient,” she says. “With younger patients especially, there’s no pretending. When they’re unwell, it’s immediately visible, and when they recover, the turnaround can be remarkable.”

After earning her MBChB in 1995, Dr Andrag completed her paediatric training at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Kalafong Hospital, earning both the FCPaed (SA) from the Colleges of Medicine and a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics (MMed) from the University of Pretoria.

While working in private practice in Krugersdorp, she began attending cardiology clinics at Pretoria Academic Hospital (now Steve Biko Hospital) out of personal interest. That interest soon evolved, leading her to pursue formal subspecialist training in paediatric cardiology at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the University of Cape Town. She obtained her Certificate in Paediatric Cardiology in 2012.

Since then, Dr Andrag has practised in both the public and private sectors. She has worked at Red Cross, Tygerberg, and Kuils River hospitals, and has maintained involvement at Red Cross alongside her private practice. She has also briefly worked at Grootte Schuur heart transplant clinic.

She values the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and their families, especially in complex congenital cases where care extends over years. “It is rewarding to see children live a full life despite life’s challenges,” she says.

Outside of medicine, she is married with a daughter. She enjoys Pilates, gardening, nature walks, reading and crochet, and values time spent in the peaceful outdoors.

Dr Andrag remains committed to paediatric cardiac care in both the public and private sectors. Through her work, she continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with heart conditions and their families.
